"I just wanted to know what it felt like to kill someone."

Showing disturbed signs from at least the age of 10, 15-year-old Alyssa Bustamante premeditated the murder of her 9-year-old neighbor, Elizabeth Olten, on the 21st of October, 2009 in St. Martins, Missouri.

Alyssa was born to a teenage mother, who has a criminal record for petty crimes, drug possession, and a DUI. Alyssa's father was in prison serving a 10-year sentence for assault. Alyssa was described as a violent, depressed, and angry child, always speaking to her friends about the darker side of life: gothic poetry, cutting herself, numerous suicide attempts, and even stated to one friend "I would love to know how it feels to kill someone." It seemed as if the fantasy wasn't enough and she wanted the real thing, so one Friday evening, while other teenagers were out doing what teens do, Alyssa began to dig two graves.

That opportunity for murder came to fruition 4 days later, when she spotted her neighbor returning home from her friends house. 9-year-old Elizabeth was easily persuaded by the cunning teenager to approach her, and when she did, Alyssa grabbed her, strangled her, slashed her throat and stabbed the child numerous times.

Police have speculated that the reason that Alyssa had dug not one, but two graves, was because she had planned to murder her two younger brothers, but had instead grabbed the opportunity to kill Elizabeth when it presented itself. They feel the YouTube video backs up this theory; she clearly took delight in inflicting pain on her brothers, and can be seen in one of her videos giggling while she encourages her youngest brother to touch an electric fence.

Alyssa was arrested, and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Elizabeth Olten. She appeared in court on November the 17th, 2009, where the judge ruled that she should be tried as an adult, given the grim nature of the crime.

Her diary was confiscated by police and used as evidence, here is one part of her confession in it: "I just f***ing killed someone. I strangled them and slit their throat and stabbed them now they're dead. I don't know how to feel atm [at the moment],".

She later added: "It was ahmazing. As soon as you get over the 'ohmygawd I can't do this' feeling, it's pretty enjoyable. I'm kinda nervous and shaky though right now. Kay, I gotta go to church now...lol."

Alyssa was sentenced to life in prison WITH the possibility of parole. She may yet be out one day.

• Described by friends as a normal 15 year old girl, sweet and amazing but her online persona revealed a much more sinister side. Bustamante’s virtual alter-ego would foreshadow what would be her most heinous act: the killing of 9 year old Elizabeth Olten.

• Her mother had a long history of drug and alcohol abuse which led to charges and jail time. Her father was also serving jail time for assaul, Alyssa was raised by her grandparents who also took legal custody of three younger siblings.

• Friends said Alyssa would write poetry and  regularly attended church at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where she participated in youth activities.

• 2007 - Alyssa tried to end her life, after spending 10 days at a psychiatric hospital the teen went on anti-depressants. Despite the medications, Alyssa practiced cutting herself several times. Friends said she frequently showed them the scars on her wrists.

• Bustamante’s Twitter talked about how she hated authority. One post read, “Bad decisions make great stories.” She listed her hobbies on YouTube and MySpace as “killing people” and “cutting.” She also posted a YouTube video where she tried to get two of her brothers to try to touch an electric fence.

• October 2009 - Alyssa brought her darkest fantasies to light, only four houses down from her own family home lived 9 year old Elizabeth Olten. Elizabeth regularly came over to play with Alyssa and her siblings and on the night she was murdered her mother shared how she had cried and pleaded to go and play there. 5pm was the last time her mother saw her alive, when she hadn't returned by 6pm she knew something was wrong.

• FBI agents questioned Alyssa and seized her diary, they found a shallow hole behind Alyssa’s house and the teenager told the FBI she just liked to dig holes. Later in the investigation a shallow grave covered with leaves behind the house was where Elizabeth’s body was recovered.

• Even though her family and friends were shocked and thought she was a great person, her diary entries revealed something much darker. Alyssa had tried to cover up the entry by blotting out the blue ink but investigators were able to unveil the original writing in which Bustamante talks about the euphoria she felt after killing Elizabeth.

“I just f***ing killed someone. I strangled them and slit their throat and stabbed them now they’re dead. I don’t know how to feel atm. It was ahmazing. As soon as you get over the ohmygawd I can’t do this feeling, it’s pretty enjoyable. I’m kinda nervous and shaky though right now. Kay, I gotta go to church now…lol.”

• A few weeks before her first-degree murder trial (2012) over two years after the murder, Alyssa accepted a plea deal to the lesser charge of second-degree murder to avoid the death penalty. As part of the plea deal, she may get out of jail in 30 years on parole.
